Junk to Punk 2016 – Welcome to the Jungle

ASU celebrated their sixth annual recycled fashion show last month, in honor of Earth Day, on April 22. This year the theme was “Welcome to the Jungle,” and students were inspired by the birds, beasts, and plants of the rainforest. They created outfits using recycled materials such as plastic bags, cardboard, scrap paper, and more.

This year Maa and Amar were our emcees, and introduced all of the participants as well as some musical entertainment. Junk 2 Funk ensembles were created by sixth graders in music who made musical instruments of different families with recyclable materials. ASU’s A Capella group also graced us with an amazing performance of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Dr. Sutton-Jones, Ms. Effa, and 2015 ASU alumni and previous fashion show winner Bolor judged the contestants in the three categories – Use of Materials, Wearability, and Craftsmanship. The winners this year were Connie, Munkule, Azzaya, and Misheel D in the junior category and Lomax, Bilguudei, Ulsa, and Orgil in the senior category for Best Use of Materials. In Craftsmanship, Manal, Anar, and Sung-Kyul won in the junior category, while Itgel, Unurjargal, and Yalguunaa took the senior prize. Finally, Uugii, Sodo, Pera, and Amarlin were the junior winners for Wearability with Ha-Jung and Ye-Seul winning the senior award in the same category.

It was a very exciting competition, including a fifth grade entry and contestants from the English School of Mongolia for the first time. Many thanks go to all the students for all their hard work, as well as the emcees, judges, and everyone else who helped to make it happen!
