Biomolecules Lab

Biology 1 students conducted an inquiry lab to evaluate the presence of Biomolecules in various food and drink. Students used chemical indicators, which each react differently when exposed to different Biomolecules, to determine which types of carbs, proteins, and lipids were present in the tested substances. After collecting data from the experiment students wrote about how certain foods are important for the functioning of cells and cell activities due to the specific Biomolecules they contain.

Students tested the reaction rate of catalyses (liver enzyme) with Hydrogen Peroxide under various temperature conditions. This helps students understand the limited range in which enzymes can optimally function in the human body and further demonstrates the lack of chemical reaction when proteins are denatured due to certain environmental situations.
