Secondary School Profile

The American School of Ulaanbaatar (ASU) is a privately owned international school founded in 2006. We offer all-English instruction from Pre-K through Grade 12. We aim to prepare our students to succeed at colleges and universities throughout the English speaking world and beyond. Our goal is to create a community of life-long learners with the skills and attitudes necessary to be intellectually reflective; lead a life of meaningful work; be caring and ethical citizens; and be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.

ASU’s program is aligned with the Ontario Curriculum policy documents. All of our High School courses in grades 9-12 utilizethe Ontario Curriculum guidelines with appropriate modifications for our international setting. Our assessment policies comply with the Ontario Curriculum guidelines for all high school courses.

The current grading scale is as follows:

97-100 A+; 93-96 A; 90-92 A-; 87-89 B+; 83-86 B; 80-82 B-; 77-79 C+; 73-76 C; 70-72 C; 67-69 D+; 63-66 D; 60-62 D-; and below 60 F.

ASU offers Advanced Placement classes. The current subjects are Calculus A/B, Computer Science A, English Literature and Composition and World History. Yearly course offerings change according to student demand and teacher availability.

Students who graduate from ASU are required to successfully complete a minimum of 30 credits, where a credit is defined as having received a minimum of 110-120 instructional hours. Our students need 18 creditsto satisfy compulsory graduation requirements; the remaining credits are free electives. Students also have a community service requirement of 40 hours for graduation. ASU holds continuing accreditation issued by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (W.A.S.C) as seen on their website at The ASU high school diploma is a WASC accredited international diploma. Since we began operating in 2006, our students have been accepted to many colleges and universities in Canada, the U.S.A., the U.K., South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Our students have matriculated at outstanding institutions, such as the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, Simon Frasier, Drake University, Temple University, the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, St. John’s University, Loyola University of Chicago, the University of Tasmania, the University of Adelaide, Tel Aviv University and Doshisha University.
